Shared decision-making, self-management and other aspects of patient engagement can lead to superior health outcomes. The term “patient engagement” refers to when a patient plays an active role in improving their health. It is critical to the provider delivering and the patient receiving the highest quality healthcare. The following are several effective ways to improve patient engagement.
Use Patient Portals and Apps
According to the Pew Research Center, more than 93% of Americans use the internet. Online resources are convenient tools for engaging patients. Use online portals to give patients access to their medical information and update the portals frequently. Smartphone apps can also provide easy access to important health information, appointment scheduling and prescription refills.
Communicate Regularly
It’s easier for a patient to remain engaged in improving their health when they know their physician is dedicated too. Ask the patient if they prefer to communicate via text messages, phone calls, email, the patient portal, video conferencing, or another communication channel. Contact them regularly with relevant health information, even if a portion of the messages or emails are automated.
Set Goals
Work with the patient to set small, achievable health goals. Continue setting loftier goals as the patient reaches each milestone.
Refrain from Making Assumptions
Find out what your patient knows about their health and general healthcare concepts. Don’t assume their current understanding is medically accurate without inquiring first.
Educate the Patient
A patient who understands their health is more likely to remain engaged in the healthcare and treatment processes. Teach them how to review their test results, validate medical records, view necessary educational material and use other aspects of the patient portal.
Make Decisions Together
Previously, standard practice involved the doctor making healthcare decisions for the patient. Involving the patient in the decision-making process, however, can create superior patient outcomes. Ask for their opinions regarding treatment options, testing and a final care plan.
