Abstract
Gilbert’s syndrome is a medical condition where the liver has trouble breaking down the yellowish-brown pigment called bilirubin found in bile. This may result in elevated blood bilirubin levels and seldom, mild jaundice. A hereditary disorder known as Gilbert’s syndrome occurs in families. Due to a defective gene, the liver of people with the condition has trouble eliminating bilirubin from the blood. This article focused on the main points of the disease including causes, symptoms, and ayurvedic treatment for gilbert syndrome.
Introduction
Gilbert syndrome is an autosomal recessive liver disease affecting bilirubin metabolism. Recurrent bouts of jaundice and unconjugated hyperbilirubinemia are caused by reduced glucuronidation of bilirubin. The most significant component causing this illness is bilirubin. The digestive fluid called bile, which the liver produces and which aids in the body’s absorption of fat contains bilirubin. Being a component of the digestive system, the liver breaks down lipids, removes toxins from the blood, and stores glucose for energy. Males are more prone than females to have this kind of liver illness. All age ranges, races, and ethnicities are impacted. Thirty percent of those who have this illness are asymptomatic. The syndrome’s episodes happen when the body is under stress, is dehydrated, or goes for extended periods without fasting. It is sometimes referred to as hereditary non-hemolytic jaundice and constitutional hepatic insufficiency.
Causes of Gilbert Syndrome
It is a genetic disorder that runs in families. Due to a defective gene, the liver of people with the condition has trouble eliminating bilirubin from the blood. Because of a defective gene, bilirubin does not enter the bile at the regular rate in people with Gilbert’s syndrome. Rather, it accumulates in the blood, which is why it appears yellow on the skin and in the whites of the eyes. Gilbert’s syndrome is brought on by a gene mutation (UGT1A1) that impairs the liver’s bilirubin-processing capacity. This gene is responsible for the production of bilirubin uridine diphosphate glucuronosyltransferase (bilirubin-UGT) enzymes. This enzyme, which is present in liver cells, is essential for the body’s bilirubin removal.

- Avoid intense exercises
- Stay hydrated
- Techniques to cope with stress

Ayurvedic View of Gilbert Syndrome
The three doshas that comprise the body, according to Ayurveda, are Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. Additionally, there are seven dhatus: rasa (Lymph), rakta (Blood), mansa (Muscular tissue), meda (Adipose tissue), majja (Bone marrow), asthi (Bones), and shukra (Reproductive strength). Gilbert’s condition is included in the 7TH DHATU, or Shukr Dhatu, as it is a hereditary condition. Shukra dhatu is the one who brings together the three primary components of GARBHA, which are beej (germinal cells), beej bhaga (chromosomes), and beej bhag avayava (Genes). Shonita (ovum) and Shukra (sperm) are regarded as beej. Defects in the beej are the cause of all hereditary diseases. Gilbert syndrome is a kind of beej dushti in which the pitta vaha strotas (channels) circulate the elevated vaat and kapha dosha (prokopa). This results in the kapha dosha avrodha (blockage) of the pitta vaha strotas, and the vata dosha eliminates the pitta dosha and builds up in the liver, which eventually causes the discoloration of the skin, nails, and eyes. In Ayurveda, Gilbert Syndrome is correlated to Kamala.
KAMALA
The name Kamala, which comes from the root words “Kamu” (which means “kaanti”) and “Lunati” (which means “Nasha”), refers to a Pitta nanatmaja, Rakta pradoshaja vikara, involving Raktavaha srotas (moola of yakrut please). A pathological disease known as “lunata” causes natural skin colour to become vitiated or disappear. In addition, this illness manifests as vitiated mala, decreased or no appetite, and discoloration.
